DejaVu font

Starting from version Fedora Core 6, the system's default font is DejaVu. Thanks to this change, the default installation of Fedora Core has a uniform look and feel for all latin-based, greek and cyrillic scripts.

DejaVu is a project that aims to provide a wider range of characters (Current status ) while maintaining the original look and feel of Bitstream Vera through the process of collaborative development .

The Fedora Project is using the DejaVu LGC variation which includes support for latin-based languages, greek and cyrillic (LGC: Latin, Greek, Cyrillic) while the standard DejaVu font has currently support for even more scripts such as Arabic and Armenian. This was a technical decision for this version of Fedora Core, which might change in the future to add support for more languages.

Bitstream Vera and derivatives

DejaVu is one of the most popular free and open-source derivatives of the Bitstream Vera font family .

Thanks to the release of the Bitstream Vera with a free and open-source license in April 2003, it has been possible for font designers to innovate by increasing the language coverage to support more latin-based languages, cyrillic, greek and other scripts.
