Getting Around in Dresden

Flock 2018 edition

General Tips

  • Tipping at restaurants: Between 5-10%. You need to calculate the tip amount when presented with the check, and ask the server to bill you for the entire amount. Leaving tips after the check is settled is frowned upon. This is true even for credit card transactions.
  • Be prepared to carry a lot of cash around. Many places, restaurants included, do not accept cards.
  • Be prepared to carry a lot of coins around. Vending machines, and some public transport ticket machines do not support card transactions.

Getting In

By Air

Dresden has an international airport very close to the city. Berlin and Prague airports are within 2 hours' travel distance by road or rail.

Transportation Notes
  • Prague (PRG) > take a bus to Prague city center and from there direct bus or train to Dresden [~3h]
  • Berlin Tegel (TXL) > take a bus from Berlin TXL to Dresden Neustadt [~3h]
  • Berlin Schoenefeld (SXF) > take a bus from Berlin, Berlin SXF to Dresden central [~2h]
  • Leipzig (LEJ) > take a train from Leipzig/Halle Flughafen to Dresden-Neustadt [~1.5 h]

By Train

Dresden is very well connected by the Deutsche Bahn train system. Connections to almost all places in Europe are available. Check the rail network site for details.

Getting around

Public Transport

Get the Deutsche Bahn app on Play Store, or the Transportr app on F-Droid (and select the Deutsche Bahn network in Germany). Trains (S1, S2) run every 30 minutes. Trams (numbered 1-13) / buses (numbered 60+) run every 10 minutes during day time, with reduced frequency during nights. The Transportr app finds the optimal connections and shows maps + walking directions. The Dresden Public Transport website has a trip planner and network maps. Note that the airport, city center, and the main train station are in the main Dresden zone, but the hotel is in the Radebeul zone, so ensure to get a 2-zone ticket where necessary.
