What, When, Where

SeaGL 2018

Registration

Registration is free. However, please plan to park in a neighboring lot. The cost can be $10-$20 per day.

Accommodations

There are many Hotels in the downtown Seattle area. There are no special prices for the event.

Fedora Server

Fedora Server is an amazing platform to run Web Pages, email, and games. While not recommended for production, Fedora Server is a great platform for home use. Fedora server can also be run as a front-end home firewall. It is great for students to learn System Administration skills as well as various types of coding, including BASH.

Why is Fedora attending SeaGL 2018?

Jeff Fitzmaurice (steelaworkn) contacted the SeaGL Conference to inquire about attending. Back in 2016, Jeff Sandys attended the event. Jeff Fitzmaurice had the opportunity to attend. SeaGL is offering free booth space this year to Fedora. The Fedora logo will also be on their website for the event.

What is the focus of the event?

From https://seagl.org:

"SeaGL is a grassroots technical conference dedicated to spreading awareness and knowledge about the GNU/Linux community and free/libre/open-source software/hardware. Our goal for SeaGL is to produce an event which is as enjoyable and informative for those who spend their days maintaining hundreds of servers as it is for a student who has only just started exploring technology options. SeaGL's first year was 2013. "

How does our attendance at this event build users or contributors to specific Fedora solutions - and why are those particular solutions important?

Attending events such as SeaGL allows students and instructors to see Fedora as a viable platform to teach and learn with. Students are the next generation of developers. If Open Source operating systems are to survive, students need to see their value. We go to events like SeaGL to communicate the value of the Fedora Project to the next generation.

How does our attendance at this event build users or contributors to the Fedora platform overall.

As we expose new students to the Fedora Project, we have high hopes that a few will join. All we can do is provide them with the information they are looking for and point them in the right direction. The key is making contact with people who are searching for something to do. Students are encouraged to join the Fedora Project to, quite frankly, pad their resumes.

Young people just joining the workforce need to have a little bit of padding in the volunteer portion of their resumes. As we attend SeaGL we are providing potential opportunities to volunteer time, energy and knowledge. As they volunteer they will get to rub shoulders with some of the most innovative people in the Open Source community.

Measured Success

Success can only be measured by people volunteering as a result of meeting one of us at events like SeaGL. If we decide against attending such events, we will be relying on individual contact as opposed to mass exposure to the future developers of the world.

Volunteers

Friday booth setup starts at 7:00 am with a conference start time of 9:00 am. Friday and Saturday Exhibition hall opens from 9AM to 5PM. If you would like to come help at the booth please let Jeff Fitzmaurice know and add your name below.

Current Attendees (Users)
