'' Choosing GNOME and not something else ''

I personally like GNOME and more so with GNOME 3. I have created a poll for you to vote for KDE or GNOME. Please go ahead and vote [http://micropoll.com/t/KEvl3ZB405 here]

'''Update (Aug 18, 2011):''' My feelings for GNOME 3 is starting to change a bit :-) So, I have also created a KDE based Scientific spin, which I think I like more.
I should point out here that my idea is to have a generic toolset made available. The number of tools currently available in different domains- Physics, Chemistry, Biology is just too many. Including them all in one big spin may not make a lot of users happy, simply because if I am a engineering researcher, the Biology tools are just useless to me. I haven't actively looked into applications which may not be available in the repository and is important to a spin such as this. Needless to say, I am going to take upon the responsibility of packaging such software, when I come across one, or its pointed to me. If you come across a package which you want shipped, please add them here.

'''Update (Sep 8, 2011):''' I shall have a XFCE based Kickstart file ready as well.
== Initial spin review ==
# Please fill out all fields before you mark the spin 'Ready for Wrangler'.
# Please state the targeted size of the spin.
# So is this going to be a GNOME or KDE based spin? You can only have one spin and one kickstart.
# What about duplicated functionality, e.g. evolution/kmail and thunderbird?
# What is the target audience? For me this looks like a mixture of development and science.

Thanks for your response. I have have tweaked the page a little and marked it'ready for SIG', however there are still some things that can be improved:
# Better slogan
# Add text for the spins page
# Add text for the download tab
# Rework text for the support tab. The text you enter here is meant to end up on spins.fedoraproject.org/scientific, so please don't use first person.
# Include an update on the artwork status

I should point out here that my idea is to have a generic toolset made available. The number of tools currently available in different domains- Physics, Chemistry, Biology is just too many. Including them all in one big spin may not make a lot of users happy, simply because if I am a engineering researcher, the Biology tools are just useless to me. I haven't actively looked into applications which may not be available in the repository and is important to a spin such as this. Needless to say, I am going to take upon the responsibility of packaging such software, when I come across one, or its pointed to me. If you come across a package which you want shipped, please add them here.

Initial spin review

  1. Please fill out all fields before you mark the spin 'Ready for Wrangler'.
  2. Please state the targeted size of the spin.
  3. So is this going to be a GNOME or KDE based spin? You can only have one spin and one kickstart.
  4. What about duplicated functionality, e.g. evolution/kmail and thunderbird?
  5. What is the target audience? For me this looks like a mixture of development and science.

Initial spin review Response

Please fill out all fields before you mark the spin 'Ready for Wrangler'.

AMIT: Done.

Please state the targeted size of the spin.

AMIT: Targetted DVD size. Right now, the ISO takes up 2.2 G.

So is this going to be a GNOME or KDE based spin? You can only have one spin and one kickstart.

AMIT: KDE. Modified the spins page

What about duplicated functionality, e.g. evolution/kmail and thunderbird?

AMIT: I will remove thunderbird from the KS file or any applications which provide duplicate functionality.

What is the target audience? For me this looks like a mixture of development and science.

AMIT: There is significant amount of coding/development which goes on in simulation based research. So, it really targets Science, who also has development "needs".

Final fixes

Thanks for your response. I have have tweaked the page a little and marked it'ready for SIG', however there are still some things that can be improved:
