There are two primary office suite recommendations for Fedora users: the OpenOffice.org suite for GNOME desktop users and KOffice suite for the KDE desktop. Each suite of office tools includes presentation, spreadsheet, and word processing applications. Additional office applications are also available depending on the office suite selected.
Remember both office suites will run on any Fedora desktop environment. The recommendation is only the office suite best optimized for a specific desktop environment, such as GNOME or KDE. Once installed, all office tools are available from the Applications > Office menu or as icons located in the menu bar or on the desktop.
Installing Fedora from the DVD automatically includes the preferred office suite for the selected desktop environment. Other methods of installing Fedora do not include the office suite software, but installation is easily achieved after Fedora is running. If the office productivity tools are not installed, install them using the Add/Remove Software utility. Detailed instructions for the Add/Remove Software utility are included in the chapter User Guide - Managing Software.
In the Add/Remove Software utility, all office applications are appropriately located under the Office category. A search using a specific office suite name also lists all of the available programs.
The alternative installation option is to use the command line. The following commands are entered into either the Terminal or Konsole application.
To install the OpenOffice.org office suite type:
su -c 'yum groupinstall "Office/Productivity"'
To install the KOffice suite of programs, type:
su -c 'yum install koffice-suite'
OpenOffice.org creates documents in open standards formats, such as OpenDocument (.ODF), Rich Text Format (.RTF), and HTML. It can also read, edit, and write documents in Microsoft Office formats, such as Word (.DOC), Excel (.XLS), and PowerPoint (.PPT), with a high degree of compatibility. Files can be exported in PDF format without the need of additional software.

Officially, the KOffice FAQ recommends using .RTF or .PDF formats for compatibility with Microsoft Word. KOffice does support Microsoft file formats, but there are issues with compatibility.
