Introduction

  • Submissions will need to provide original file in case they are chosen. Links to video hosting sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) are acceptable for judging but the original file will be required to win. --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Dates are in the past and need updating. Obviously we can do this when the contest is ready to launch. --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Rules and points to note in detail

A few questions about specific points.

  • Please submit original content: The content must not not infringe on any third party rights. (Please read on for licensing information)
  • Shouldn't it be acceptable for users to remix content that is released under a licence compatible with the licence of the overall video submission as long as proper attribution is provided either during the outro or in a bumper following it? .i.e a video is submitted with audio from a song release by John Doe but the submission includes attribution "Outro music from Cool Song by John Doe CC-BY". --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
  • I assume that the Fedora logo is acceptable (encouraged?) for use in the outro trailer but the usage and trademark guidelines aren't compatible with the licences we're asking the submissions to be provided under. How do we handle other artwork submitted including the logo? --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
    • At the very lease we should provide a link to the logo usage guidelines for contestants wishing to use the logo in their submission. --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Since the template is to be used by the Fedora Videos project, by entering the contest, you grant Fedora the right to use, modify, or post the entry without further compensation.
  • Your submission must either be licensed under the Fedora Content Default license (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license with Moral Rights Clause Waiver and GPL Relicensing Permission), or explicitly licensed under another acceptable Fedora Content license. Any entries received without an explicitly specified license will be used under the Fedora Content Default License. Details and a FAQ on the Fedora Content Default License can be found here: Legal:Fedora_Project_Contributor_Agreement
  • A list of acceptable Fedora Content Licenses can be found here:Licensing#Content_Licenses
  • Doesn't this mean the licences permitted for submission to the contest must be "FSF free"? CC-BY-ND is listed as a a "good" licence but would prevent modification of the submitted work. --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
  • All federal, state, and local taxes are the winner's responsibility. Also, all federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.
  • Doesn't this assume the winner resides in the US or is it because Fedora / Red Hat is based in the US that we only need to make a disclaimer for "federal, state and local"? --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Technical specifications

  1. Video quality (minimum suggested): SD
  2. Intro size (minimum suggested): 1600x1200
  3. Outro size (minimum suggested): 1600x1200
  • Bigger is better. Preferably we'd be able to get the any submissions made from rendering / animation in multiple resolutions so it doesn't need to be scaled to match the video the outro is being attached to. For recorded video however a better result is achieved from scaling a high resolution video down to a lower resolution. Video that is scaled up to a higher resolution typically looks terrible. I'd strongly recommend a minimum resolution of 720p HD. Most small consumer video cameras and dSLRs can record at this resolution and I suspect we'd even want to downscale any video we get of a higher resolution for space and streaming performance anyway. --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
  1. Frame rate (minimum suggested): 24fps
  • I've got no idea how well combining two videos with different frame rates works but I imagine its probably problematic. I've got no good recommendation on this item since 24fps has a more "film" look which is nice but 30fps is the broadcast "standard". My Flip records at 30fps, my dSLR will do 24 or 30fps at 1080p HD or even 60fps at 720p HD, and I checked the built in screen cast utility in gnome-shell which uses 25fps (<face palm>). --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
  1. Video format: ogg
  2. Music format: ogv
  • Is WebM acceptable as well? I'd change this to the content bellow. --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Will we have any places (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) or will there just be one winning entry? --Rharrison 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
