Can't make the date?
If you come to this page before or after the test day is completed, your testing is still valuable, and you can use the information on this page to test, file any bugs you find at Bugzilla, and add your results to the results section. If this page is more than a month old when you arrive here, please check the current schedule and see if a similar but more recent Test Day is planned or has already happened.

What to test?[edit]

Today's installment of Fedora Test Day will focus on GNOME 40

Who's available?[edit]

The following cast of characters will be available for testing, workarounds, bug fixes, and general discussion ...

Prerequisites for Test Day[edit]

  • Fedora 34 Workstation test day iso image with GNOME 40.rc either on bare metal or in VM (please make sure you have no important data on that installation, things might go wrong -- don't do this on your production machine!). Note that the test day image provided here includes GNOME 40.rc, which is newer than what's on regular nightly iso images.
  • If you already have Fedora 34 Workstation installed, there's no need to reinstall, but just make sure to update to latest updates-testing, in particular make sure you have the GNOME 40.rc mega-update.
  • Enough free space on HDD

How to test?[edit]

Do exploratory testing[edit]

Use the latest Fedora 34 Workstation that includes GNOME 40.rc. and see if you can find anything that's crashing or not working correctly. In that case, file a bug!

Test cases[edit]

Run through the gnome-shell test cases. Warning, test cases are outdated. Try the best with testing.

What to focus on?[edit]

The updated activities overview. Try recreating a typical desktop session and setup the desktop how you'd like it, then run through some typical window and workspace operations. This can include:

  • Adding favourites to the dash
  • Reorganising the app grid
  • Launching apps through search, the dash, the app grid
  • Moving windows between workspaces
  • Switching workspaces
  • Organising and closing workspaces
  • Navigating the system using different input devices and methods: super key, shortcuts, touchpad gestures, pointer
    • Entering and exiting the overview
    • Entering and exiting the app grid
    • Moving between workspaces

If testing on bare metal, multi-monitor testing is also encouraged.

Shortcuts and gestures[edit]

Shortcuts that are expected to work in the updated overview design:

  • Open the overview: Super, Super+↑
  • Open the app grid: Super+↑ (from the overview)
  • Close the app grid or overview: Super+↓
  • Switch workspace:
    • Super+Alt+←/→, Super+PgUp/PgDown, Ctrl+Alt+←/→
    • In the overview: scroll wheel
    • Out of the overview: Super+scroll wheel

Touchpad gestures that are expected to work (depending on your setup, gestures might not work in a VM):

  • Open the overview: 3 finger swipe up
  • Open the app grid: 3 finger swipe up from overview
  • Close the app grid or overview: 3 finger swipe down
  • Switch workspace: 3 finger swipe left/right

Run the tests[edit]

Visit the result page and click on the column title links to see the tests that need to be run: most column titles are links to a specific test case. Follow the instructions there, then enter your results by clicking the Enter result button for the test.

Reporting bugs[edit]

We have two separate places to file bugs. First, downstream in Fedora bug tracker. This is mostly useful for issues with packaging and for issues that need tracking downstream (blocker bugs for F34): Red Hat Bugzilla.

Second, there's upstream GNOME Gitlab that's useful for issues that are likely not Fedora-specific. If you file an issue downstream that looks like it needs a code fix, please file it upstream as well, to make sure all relevant people get notified of the issue.

If you are unsure about exactly how to file the report or what other information to include, just ask on IRC #fedora-test-day or #fedora-qa and we will help you.

  1. Typing Assist did not work or I am doing something wrong (I don't have any experience with typing assist). After toggling the "Enable by keyboard" switch, starting Text Editor and holding down the Shift key for 8 seconds, nothing happened.
  2. On screen keyboard and screen reader were not enabled after login when enabling them in GDM. After enabling them both in Settings for my user account, on screen keyboard worked fine, but screen reader did not work at all. I later found out that this was caused by my (GNOME Boxes emulated) sound card not being detected in the actual user session. In GDM, the sound was working, but was distorted and lagging and on screen keyboard was working fine.
  3. Works fine except that files and directories on desktop are not displayed for some reason.
  4. GNOME Help is not displayed after Initial Setup finishes, but this is expected (it is not being displayed anymore since GNOME 40).
  5. Worked fine except a minor issue: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/687
  6. There was no "Use the system width font" option, however I have tried changing the font being used to Monospace. Everything worked fine.
  7. No update notifications were displayed although there were actually some updates available for installation when manually opening Software and switching to the "Updates" tab. However, after their installation, I got a notification that updates were installed, so maybe there was something wrong and it got fixed by the update.

  1. When you have two workspaces and you close the last window on the first from the activities screen, it makes the workspace switcher disappear while leaving you on the now empty workspace. This is really awkward. It should either leave the workspace switcher until you navigate to the last workspace or simply switch you to it.
  2. Hiding the switcher when there is only one workspace is very awkward for a few reasons. It's the usual widget I use from Activities to manage workspaces and it doesn't show up until you create a workspace by dragging a window to the tiny strip for the next workspace. This strip is *extra* tiny when there is only one workspace, and it only allows me to create a new workspace to the right (unlike the widget). Lastly, that tiny strip is on the edge between my two monitors and is very easy to miss. Otherwise it looks and performs smoothly even on multiple monitors with mismatched sizes and refresh rates.

  1. RHBZ #1940887 Step 1: I installed TopIconsPlus, but they weren't visible in Extensions app till I restarted the VM (couldn't be enabled after the restart)
  2. Step 1: yum should be replaced by dnf, gpk-application couldn't be found, Applications->System tools->Add/Remove Software doesn't exist in GNOME 40; Same for step 2
  3. Step 1: gpk-application couldn't be found (Applications->System tools->Add/Remove Software doesn't exists in Fedora anymore); Step 3: Accessories->Advanced Settings doesn't exist in GNOME 40, GNOME Extensions should be used instead of gnome-tweak-tools for extensions management
  4. gnome-tweak-tools doesn't manage extensions anymore
  5. Step 2: The overview is now on top of the screen in GNOME 40

  1. Tested with FEDORAPROJECT.ORG domain and klist is listing the ticket correctly
  2. I don't see ownCloud entry in Online Accounts, so I assume this means NextCloud. I tried to add my Nextcloud server and the integration works fine.

  1. RHBZ #1940266 I did an exploratory tests Everything looks to be working fine in desktop, even with lot of different applications and steam too. Multi-monitor ok. Unique thing found is about automatic updates in gnome-software for flatpak apps, looks like those are not automatically updating. If I manually click update, it works.
