READ THE GUIDELINES!
Name suggestions are now being accepted. Please read the guidelines before contributing to maximize chances that your suggestion can be on the ballot.

Rules

This page contains community suggestions for the Fedora 17 release name. All submissions must meet the guidelines for release names.

Lovelock → Verne → <new name>? Verne is a <blank>, and so is <new name>.

The link between Lovelock and Verne was "both are names of futurologists". The link between Verne and the new Fedora 17 release name must be different than that link, and different from any other previous link.

General links automatically rejected
General links such as "is a word" or "is a location", while technically within the scope of the rules, will most certainly be rejected by the Fedora Board. Remember, the goal is to come up with a creative link to Verne. The following links will also likely be rejected:
  • Other futurologists
  • Names of living people
  • Well-known trademarks
Please try to find a truly original and obscure link!

Naming Schedule

  • Name collection: 13 September through 20 September
  • List to Fedora Board: 20 September through 23 September
  • Legal Review of Board approved names: 24 September through 30 September
  • Community vote on final name: 30 September through 06 October
  • Name announced: 07 October

Name Suggestions

Please read carefully.
The instructions below will help prevent some suggestions from being eliminated early.

How to use this table

  1. Come up with a name idea. Put the name in the first column.
  2. Determine whether it passes the "is-a" test. You must be able to truthfully complete the sentence "Verne is a <...>, and so is <YOUR_NAME>." The link to the new name cannot be the same as the link from Lovelock to Verne, nor any other previous link. Mark the link in the appropriate column, such as "type of chemical reaction," "deep-sea organism."
    • Don't choose obvious links, because they usually result in uninteresting names.
    • Don't choose very general names or unclear links.
    • Don't choose names of living people, or well-known trademarks.
    • Do choose obscure links to interesting things, which makes for a better name.
    • Do avoid all previous links wherever possible.
    • Do make sure there are at least a couple of ways to link out of the new name to the next name -- and they must be unique too!
  3. Use Google to search for possible trademark collisions. First search for the term itself along with "+software", and then broaden your search to include "+computer", "+hardware", "+technology", "+IT", and so on. Do not skimp on this step.
    • If you find a collision, it is best to find another name. Names that cause collisions will be eliminated by Red Hat's Legal department and thus waste their time, which is a valuable commodity for Fedora. Help us maximize their effectiveness by weeding out names that are trademarks of other entities, especially those in the IT industry.
    • If the collision is outside the IT/computing market, you can still submit the name but you should note the collision in the "Tested" column, and include a link to the site where the collision was found.
    • If you find no collisions, make that notation in the "Tested" column.
  4. Do not mark the approval columns. These are reserved for the approval authorities such as the Board and Red Hat Legal.

Neptune Jules Verne is best known for his visionary ideas and prophecy: inventions that were made real decades later than he "discovered" them on paper. Neptune is the first "fictional" planet discovered on paper by mathematical prediction proved to be real. This is a common word used in some two- or three-letter names. Does not pass the "Is a..." test. Neptune is 17 times the mass of the Earth. It was first discovered on paper when Jules Verne was 17 years old. :) Neptune: the other Blue Planet in the Solar System. I think this planet fits the Fedora's style quite well, though I am not an artist.

Panguipulli Verne is a lake, and so is Panguipulli. I've not found any software company or software podruct related Panguipulli comes from "Pangui" (cougar), and "Pulli" (hill), both words in Mapudungun, meaning "Hill of the cougar". Animal, wild animals, mountains, hills, etc.
Gernsback Along with Jules Verne and H. G. Wells was known as one of the "Fathers of Science Fiction" Google appears to only find links to information about the man himself. [2] Sci-Fi, especially something resembling early 20th century SF illustrations

Grimm {Verne,Grimm} is a top ten translated author. minor software matches, [5], [6] [7] Jules Verne is #2, Jacob Grimm is #10. A Grimm in Harry Potter lore is a large black dog and Grimm's Fairy Tales ought to be a rich source of themes
Mini Verne Troyer is an actor who played mini-me - maybe naming distro mini will help to keep the bloat down? Mini Cars, but really - no one can claim a trademark on a word "anything small or little" will do as a theme - dolphin turns to porpoise and so on

Villeroi {Verne,Villeroi} is famous for creating the designs for the US Navy's first submarine termed the "USS Alligator" for possible use in the US Civil War. The first submarine was created during the Revolutionary War and given the named Turtle, however, this craft never served in the US Navy . "no collision" audio pronunciation by FrenchForAll at http://www.forvo.com/word/villeroi/ Around the year of 1842 Brutus de Villeroi was the professor of drawing and mathematics at the college Jules Verne attended. It has been speculated there is a very good chance De Villeroi may have been one of Jules Verne's teachers that could have inspired Verne's conceptual design for the "Nautilus" submarine in his famous book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. source http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Verne . Then yet again, one still wonders "maybe" Verne's drawings and/or writings while attending the college may have inspired or given the teacher ideas to help create a very deep, air compressed and water tight underwater vessel. Hence, the first US Navy submarine was born and presented into the soon to be booming industrial age. Themes-yes, submarines, ships and underwater, beautiful ocean creatures etc.
