Summary

BIND10 is next generation of the popular BIND9 DNS server rewritten from scratch. BIND10 suite includes both DNS and DHCP service servers.

Detailed Description

BIND10 suite implements two crucial network services - DNS and DHCP. The BIND10 is going to replace both widely used ISC BIND9 and ISC DHCP software in the future. It is written from scratch and has modular design.

The main advantages are:

  • modular design
    • authoritative nameserver runs in separate processes. Bug in supplementary process won't affect availability of the server domain
      • b10-ddns (DDNS service), b10-xfrin (incomming zone transfers), b10-xfrout (outcomming zone transfers), b10-stats (statistics)
    • recursive server runs as separate process (b10-resolver)
  • modern design, improved scalability
  • officially supported SQL database backends (only SQLite currently but MySQL and PostgreSQL are planned)

Users can easily install & use BIND10 from distribution repositories.

Contingency Plan

Users don't have to install bind10 pkgs and can use current bind9 (shipped in bind-* pkgs). Only users which explicitly install bind10-* pkgs will be affected by this feature so contingency plan is "just install bind and don't install bind10".

BIND10 suite is now shipped in Fedora repositories. It is splitted into following subpackages:

  • bind10 installs full BIND10 suite (utilities + DNS servers + DHCP servers)
  • other subpkgs - TBD
