basically telling about my experience in Joining Fedora as a non coding newbie

SIG join group on telegram is a good place to start <3

Fedora badges : the first thing that attracted me 2019

Sometime in 2019 I heard about Fedora Badges as a nice wasy to reward volunteers on an open source project and

I really liked the hopin venue (that I discovered) and found the welcoming really impressive, but did not know what or where to contribute. Marie Nordin after an intro where we spoke a lot about art, poetry and fedora badges (that I found really gratifying that she would take time to welcome a newbie) proposed that I contribute to the Fedora Zine. I wrote a small poem. That was a gratifyng step, although I did feel like an imposteure, given the fact I was not yet part of that community! Registering was complex, I did not understand everything (accounts, pagure, how to download a pic for the zine). But the people were really nice and welcoming. After that I was stuck in limbo for many months, not knowing where to go or what to do and still feeling very shy.

FWD experience oct 2020 : how it all started

I was invited by a fellow wikimedian to participate to this event designed to be inclusive for non binary folx, after sharing quite a few micro aggressions and doing some suck puppet search on the francophone wikipedia, where I founded a project called Les sans pagEs. Welcoming newbies is a challenge there because some problematic interractions might go unoticed. So basically I am always interested to learn something new and innovative to bring more inclusivity and friendliness to my community on wikipedia. This wikimedian had described how the Fedora community was really welcoming and explained the principle of the Fedora badges. I found the concept really inspiring, but would not have considered joining on that perspective, thinking I had close to nothing to offer to this "fedorable" community. TBH I felt really shy, gven that I was told the wikipedia community had a bad reputation in OSS projects. It makes my heart bleed because I know so many great people in that community, who are trying to change things from the inside to make it more friendly. Having an open wiki allowing anyone to edit can be challenging:/.

Zine participation

This was my first contribution in 2020 during the FWD : https://pagure.io/design/issue/682 I really thought it was great to be avised after a welcoming discussion during FWD during which we spoke of art and design to be allowed to write a small poem and make a drawing.

How to contribute

"I had been told by several persons I could translate docs but I had no clue what and where. I even wrote on my user page as a starter "If you see this maybe you can suggest ways in which a total coding noob can be included in such a project.".

I was allready familiar with the wiki code through my experience as a wikimedian, but I have seen that it is not easy for anyone and can be quite a challenge in the first place for newbies not familiar with coding with mediawiki. I think enabling a visual editor as it was done for the wikimedia movement might ease the first "cultural shock" for new contributors of design, translation and anything not related to developing software.

I felt like "OK it's a wonderful community, but I am not sure these top innovation lord hackers would be interested in what I have to offer...".

Fedora accounts (FAS)

This is the thing that pops up when you try to connect to any Fedora page (pagure, wiki, badge, webtranslate, Hyper kitty, community blog on wordpress). so better keep your password safe, cos you are going to need it often! To me as a wikimedian this seems very strange (as we have centralized accounts).

Also the old page sometimes pops up but it has a big red banner so you cannot miss it (maybe some sort of query to change the old links could be useful?)

Pagure

This is the place where pull requests are made within the fedora ecosystem. Complex thing for a newvie is to understand why there is a duplication on github sometimes but not always.

Hyper Kitty

Talking to discobot was really funny. I loved the puns and the step by step approach. #discobotfan

Translating with web translate

It's a great feature but a bit complicated to navigate at first. I was really impressed that I was allowed to translate using inclusive language (I asked on the mailing list first). Also what I deeply regret, is that you dont get badges for translation, so I was a little disapointed. I also did not quite understand when and how the website is updated and wether you need to wait for some kind of "approval". Then I saw on discourse that there is going to be a website revamp, so I thought I might wait a little before translating things that will disappear. Also it is still not clear to me how to join the translation interest group and how and where to ask.

Kanban

I just stumbled upon this as I am curious and not sure how to use it or what pepole do there.

Joining IRC in the midst of Freenode turmoil

It took me .... too weeks. First everybody told me "get a client", then I got 3 different clients (Textual as it was indicated on the Libera chat website, Element as I gathered there would be at some point an "IRC bridge", Mibbit, and then I just went back to my old client Kiwiirc. On that "platform" I managed to create two "networks" (whatever that is!) but still could not join. At one point I managed to get registered though. Then to join IRC I did not not how to proceed and needed help. I changed by mistake my Nick to Nickname and was banned from 3 groups until one helpful fedoran told me to quit and come back again. I suggested at some places (on TG?) that this might be the moment to have a step by step tutorial for nobbs like me!
