Audio Test Day

Date 2021-04-09
Time all day

Website QA/Test Days
IRC #fedora-test-day (webirc)
Mailing list test

Can't make the date?
If you come to this page before or after the test day is completed, your testing is still valuable, and you can use the information on this page to test, file any bugs you find at Bugzilla, and add your results to the results section. If this page is more than a month old when you arrive here, please check the current schedule and see if a similar but more recent Test Day is planned or has already happened.

What to test?[edit]

This Test Day will focus on Pipewire by Default

Who's available[edit]

The following cast of characters will be available testing, workarounds, bug fixes, and general discussion:

You can chat with us on IRC. See the infobox on top of the page to learn the right IRC channel.

Prerequisite for Test Day[edit]

  • A virtual machine or a bare metal machine
  • An installation of Fedora 34 (any Desktop Edition or Spin). Make sure to fully update your system. If installing a fresh system, it's recommended to use the latest nightly image.

How to test?[edit]

Visit the results page and click on the column title links to see the tests that need to be run: most column titles are links to a specific test case. Follow the instructions there, then enter your results by clicking the Enter result button for the test.

Please also try to experiment and explore and perform tasks not mentioned in any of the pre-defined test cases.

Reporting bugs[edit]

All bugs should be reported into Bugzilla, in most cases against the Pipewire component. If you are unsure about exactly how to file the report or what other information to include, just ask us on IRC (see instructions above).

  1. Gaming Headset : OK DisplayPort Audio from RX 570 : OK
  2. Output device : G432 Gaming Headset Everything is OK !
  3. RHBZ #1948299 aplay not work over all endpoints (detailed in bug 1948299) alsamixer volume level adjustement work well with all physical devices
  4. Sometimes I have to close and open again the Gnome Control Center so that everything works well.
  5. Everything work fine
  6. When the audio output is in the HDMI/DP monitor, plugging an additional sound device doesn't make them default ! Likewise, unplugging the sound device returns the sound to be played on the built-in audio (and not HDMI/DP monitor even if it was the original device). It's a little annoying when you don't use the built-in audio like on a desktop computer !
  7. Works well with two audio devices at the same time

  1. My external USB microphone wasn't getting detected as a input device after the upgrade even though it shows up in lsusb. It also works fine on test users that I made but not on my main user account. It started working after I enabled and disabled the internal microphone in the BIOS. I have a second monitor with speakers connected to my laptop via HDMI. It shows up as a separate audio output in the Gnome settings and it works fine but I only see one sink when I do pactl list sinks.
  2. HDMI display speakers don't show up as an output but it works in Gnome settings.

  1. Works mostly, but "aplay -D sysdefault audiofile.wav" results in "...unable to open slave...". Playback volume can now be changed in alsamixer, but percentages do not match, e.g. 50% in alsamixer correspond to 79% in pavucontrol.

  1. Same deviation between alsamixer and pavucontrol as with my desktop PCs. Additionally sometimes the master control in alsamixer gets stuck and then playback volume can't be changed with pavucontrol either until reboot. Not observed with F33 and Pulseaudio.
  2. Sometimes playback volume cannot be changed, possibly caused by prior invocation of alsamixer.
  3. Doesn't work reliable with this laptop. When a headset is plugged into the combo jack, output is switched from internal speakers to headphones most times, but not always. When the headset is unplugged, output either changes back to internal speakers or remains assigned to the combo jack, in which case the displayed output device in pavucontrol changes from "Headphones (plugged in)" to "Headphones (unplugged)".

  1. No sound at all from headphones. Microphone indicator working in Settings>Sound>Input Device. Pavucontrol> Input Devices> Microphone indicator works. Settings>Sound>Output Device>Test doesn't work.
  2. Microphone indicator meter works on front left but not on front right in Pavucontrol>Volume Control>Input Devices with Lock channels unlocked. Recorded a recording on Gnome Sound Recorder. It looked like it was recording by the sound wave indicator. There was noise on the playback, but the recording was not speech recognizable by my ears. My output is not working right, so it is impossible for me to know for sure if it recorded correctly. But it did record something by the indication of the sound wave indicator.

  1. tested on internal audio and Logitech ClearChat USB
  2. for test 2 had to specify default not sysdefault in command
  3. running XFCE not Gnome - have not tested
  4. mono source only tested
  5. adding / removing devices work and they all show, however inconsistent on whether speakers or headphones have to be selected manually after plugging or unplugging. Sometimes switches automatically sometimes manually. Audacious also froze and on restart had switched to ALSA Output. Was able to change back to pulseaudio without issue. I don't think this is a Fedora upgrade bug have had similar problems using Xubuntu previously.
  6. No bluetooth on this computer, not tested
  7. tested with built-in audio and USB headphones all good
  8. used M-Audio Oxygen 49 for kb test
