GPG key signing events (parties) are important for establishing webs of trust. A fairly simple process of establishing a set of GPG keys, sending your public key to the organizer, meeting at a designated spot with your key fingerprint and identification, confirming your key fingerprint with everyone else, and then meeting everyone at the event and checking their identification to make sure you can trust who they say they are.
