  • Summary
    • Present
      • nirik
      • Bruno
    • We need new meeting time that kanarip can usually make.
      • Bruno will send a message to the spins list to ask kanarip to pick a new time.
    • LZMA status update
      • The LZMA update to squashfs did not make the 2.6.31 merge window.
      • Bruno will watch for a patch getting posted somewhere else (linux-next?) and ask our people to backport it. Otherwise it won't be in F12 as the 2.6.32 kernel is unlikely to be ready in time.
    • Renaming the inclomplete spin category.
      • We didn't have any objections to this, but didn't want to implement a change without karanip present. But if he picks a new name we can do this without waiting for another meeting.
    • Link style of member list on the wiki
      • Bruno will change this from FirstLast to User:user when convenient.
    • Discontinued spin process
      • Bruno will eventually write a draft for when and how to adjust the wiki pages and the spin-kickstarts package
    • Recurring spin process
      • Bruno will eventually try to pull together some existing information and write a draft that can replace the empty page that is pointed to now.
    • Talked about dual arch
      • This is not something that would be generally used for all spins. So unless a particular spin owner wants to try this, probably nothing will happen.
    • Fedbot
      • We tried out fedbot but didn't use all of its features. We will try to continue using it for meetings. Eventually it will put logs on Fedora infrastructure and we could just link to the logs.
    • Reporting
      • Bruno will email a summary to the spins mailing list.

17:06:54 <nirik> #startmeeting
17:07:01 <nirik> #meetingtopic Spins SIG
17:07:07 <nirik> #topic lzma
17:07:13 <nirik> go ahead. ;)
17:07:38 <nirik> #chair brunowolff kanarip
17:07:57 <brunowolff> The lzma squashfs update did not make it into 2.6.31 in either of the first two rc's, so it probably won't be in until 2.6.32.
17:08:34 <nirik> thats too bad. ;(
17:08:35 <brunowolff> I'll keep an eye on it, but we can't count on having more space on live images for F12.
17:08:52 <nirik> I don't suppose fedora kernel folks would be willing to take it as a patch?
17:09:48 <brunowolff> I haven't seen the patch show up anywhere yet. Phillip Lougher claimed to be working on it and had hoped to make it in the 2.6.31
17:09:56 <brunowolff> merge window but didn't.
17:10:28 <brunowolff> If I see it show up in kernel next or something, I add that to the bug and hope we can get it early.
17:11:00 <brunowolff> The timing is such that F12 will probably release with 2.6.31, though 2.6.32 will be releasing around the same time.
17:11:02 <nirik> ok, sounds good. How much space does that save? or hard to say?
17:11:24 <brunowolff> I have seem claims of around 20% better than gzip.
17:11:54 <brunowolff> I haven't tried it on a live image so I don't know how good it is.
17:12:18 <brunowolff> But for the games spin that would be really nice. I could put nexuiz back on.
17:13:11 <brunowolff> I don't know if it will require any changes to livecd-creator. It's possible there will be an option to mksquashfs to use
17:13:23 <brunowolff> different types of compression.
17:13:46 <brunowolff> Other than that the images that are close to the media limits will just benefit.
17:14:07 <nirik> yeah
17:15:02 <brunowolff> karanip wanted to change the name of the incomplete category. It seemed reasonable, but without his say so, I don't
17:15:12 <brunowolff> want to go make the actual changes.
17:15:48 <nirik> should we go via the agenda? or just wait for kanarip ?
17:16:42 <brunowolff> I suspect that kanarip either isn't going to attend today or is off by an hour and will show up in about 45 minutes.
17:17:22 <brunowolff> The exact name to change to seemed to be in question, so we probably need to wait for him to do anything for that item,
17:17:29 <Southern_Gentlem> (have not seen him today, so i suspect work has him busy)
17:17:31 <brunowolff> other than to say it seems OK?
17:17:56 <brunowolff> We really need to have a meeting time that is good for kanarip.
17:18:10 <brunowolff> But without him here, it's hard to set one up.
17:18:17 * nirik nods. ;(
17:19:22 <brunowolff> I'll note that we didn't object to the rename of the category, so that he can do it or ask one of us to do it based on email.
17:19:48 <nirik> yeah, rename is fine with me.
17:20:50 <brunowolff> We still need process documents for discontinued spins and recurring spins. We talked about recurring last week.
17:21:37 <brunowolff> I might get a chance to do some draft for that. I don't think the process should be too complicated and is at least partitially
17:21:51 <brunowolff> documented, just not where the link points to.
17:22:02 <alistrone_> what about this channel is?
17:22:31 <nirik> FYI, I have a list of changes I am going to land in the Xfce spin soon... shouldn't be anything major, but just mentioning.
17:22:36 <brunowolff> We dididn't talk about discontinued previously. That I think is mostly updating the wiki to indicate it was available, but won't
17:22:57 <nirik> alistrone_: this is a meeting channel. This is the Spins special interest group meeting, talking about fedora spins.
17:23:18 <brunowolff> be in later releases. And probably dropping the kickstart file from the spins-kickstart package.
17:24:14 <brunowolff> I'll see if I can write up a proposal. With the discontinued, the main issue is probably when to go in and make the changes.
17:25:34 <brunowolff> About the only other thing on the list that I see as being doable right now, is getting an OK to adjust the wiki links to members.
17:26:01 <brunowolff> The links use the old style FirstLast link instead of User:user links.
17:26:10 <brunowolff> Is there any reason not to fix that?
17:26:46 <nirik> not that I can think of.
17:27:06 <brunowolff> OK. I'll do that when I get a chance.
17:27:36 <brunowolff> Do what to talk about anything else from the proposed agenda?
17:28:26 * nirik looks at it.
17:28:55 <brunowolff> If not I am interested in knowing how to get the log from the bot? I'd like to link to or include the output in the meeting.
17:29:00 <nirik> we are not too very far from feature freeze, so we need to deal with any new spins very soon.
17:29:09 <nirik> brunowolff: it will provide a link at the end. ;)
17:29:15 <brunowolff> I'll also email a summary to the spins sig list.
17:29:49 <nirik> dual arch could be nice. Do we know anyone working on that support?
17:30:12 <brunowolff> Someone was playing with it, which is why I mentioned it.
17:30:32 <brunowolff> For some spins it would make things too large.
17:30:56 <nirik> yeah, but they could go to dvd instead of cd?
17:31:04 <brunowolff> For myself, I'd like a dual arch rescue image.
17:31:11 <brunowolff> But I think that's outside of this groups area.
17:31:40 <brunowolff> Yes, the CD images would all be double as dual arch DVD images.
17:31:51 <brunowolff> The games spin isn't going to be dual arch though.
17:32:36 <brunowolff> There are also costs to providing them as people will be downloading twice the size with half wasted in many cases.
17:32:43 <nirik> true.
17:33:08 <brunowolff> So it wouldn't be something to replace the normal images.
17:33:42 <brunowolff> I think you'd want there to be something special about the image that made it desireable.
17:34:42 <brunowolff> I think it's handy to have one rescue image that I can use on either arch. But for myself, I don't think there is a lot of
17:34:57 <brunowolff> benefit for it to the other spins. But others might feel differently.
17:35:43 <brunowolff> If we went to the x86-64 for kernel, but not user space. Then it would become a lot more practical.
17:36:02 <brunowolff> But it doesn't look like that is happening for F12.
17:36:06 <nirik> yeah.
17:37:25 <brunowolff> Back to the bot; is there a Fedora Wiki page on using it for meetings?
17:38:00 <brunowolff> Or can I assume it's available and just read the bot's project web page?
17:39:52 <nirik> yeah, there is a wiki page for the plugin... just a sec and I can dig it up.
17:40:06 <nirik> should we close the meeting then and discuss the rest on the list?
17:40:28 <brunowolff> I am done with topics unless kanarip shows up.
17:40:39 <nirik> yeah.
