From Fedora Project Wiki

I came to situation where I needed to explain given issues to upstream when they were changing their versioning scheme and started looking for a Fedora documents that would describe the matter in short and summarized form. All I could find were very detailed and long documents that would certainly be read from relevant parts and message would be lost.

Generally I have a feeling that we just try to implement technical kludges around problems that shouldn't even exist in the first place and we should at least try to communicate more with upstreams if some of those would/could be solved that way.

So I wrote a draft and hope it would be useful and if seen good enough, the draftness would be lifted from it.
