Andrew Broombaugh

I am currently a student at Appalachian State University. At Appstate, I am a member of the Association for Computing Machinery Student Chapter as well as a member in the Appstate Linux Users Group.

I wouldn't consider myself a Linux Pro by any means. However, I am proficient at the day to day tasks and a few of the more complicated tasks. I am always striving to know more and understand more about Linux and the open source concept so that I can one day contribute more substantially. As an ambassador, I hope to contribute to an increased install base percentage of Linux on campus at Appstate and a higher percentage of my favorite disto in particular, Fedora.

Activities within Fedora

Currently

  • I started with Fedora Core 1, installing it on an old compaq around sophomore or junior year of high school.
  • I relied on Windows only software for a good part of high school and my first stint at Appstate. (Or so I thought).
  • I would say that I have recently become more active in convincing friends to try Linux in dual boot just to prove that any task accomplished in Windows, can be accomplished in Linux, even if it has to be virtualized. (So what if it crashes, your base OS is still up!).

Plans

  • I plan to host campus install-fests and Linux Q & A's through the ACM and ALUG meetings and hopefully broaden people's minds to open source in general if not converting them to Fedora completely.
  • I plan to learn more about Fedora so I can be a more useful tool to people having trouble installing/using Fedora
  • I plan to, in the near future, become a developer contributor.

My plans so far mainly focus on my campus and my involvement here, but I hope to broaden these goals as my proficiency and potency for the project increase.
