Introduction

This page describes the process followed by the Marketing team to make a Release slogan for a Fedora release. If you have suggestions on how to improve these instructions, please edit the page!

Steps

Create the release slogan page

Using the prior release slogan's page as a template, create a new wiki page for the slogan of the current release, purging outdated content and updating it to reflect the working release's name and dates. The naming scheme is "F# release slogan" where # is the number of the release (i.e. F12 release slogan).

Make sure the page is listed under Category:Marketing, Category:Release Slogan, and Category:F# (where # is the number of the release).

Create redirects to the "F# release slogan" page from commonly mistyped pages and variants on capitalization, such as:

  • F# Release Slogan
  • F# release Slogan
  • Fedora# Release Slogan
  • Fedora # Release Slogan
  • Fedora# release slogan

Prepopulate the release slogan page

Get a few people to help you contribute some starter sample ideas to the release slogans page to give people inspiration for getting started. The ideas don't have to be great - they just need to exist. This should only take a few minutes, and is easily done by popping on IRC (perhaps in #fedora-mktg) and asking those who are around if they have any ideas.

Announce a call for release slogan ideas

When you feel the page is ready, announce it to the Fedora community and solicit feedback. We suggest the following publication outlets.

FIXME -- is this the right list of mailing lists?

FIXME -- actually link to the URL for each mailing list here.

FIXME -- link to some sample announcements.

Email Template

Note: This template was borrowed from the F12 cycle call for release slogan ideas.

We need a slogan for the F13 release. It will be chosen one week from now on 3/2. A release slogan is a short call-to-action that fits the artwork theme from Design, https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F13_release_slogan#Themes. (F12's slogan was "Unite," F11's slogan was "Reign.")

If you are interested in suggesting ideas for the release slogan, please take a look at the Release Slogan SOP, and the criteria for selection, at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Release_slogan_SOP. The slogan should be short, and a call to action; it should be positive, and reinforce the idea that Fedora can help the end-user achieve something great. It should also reflect some of ideas and themes found in the release artwork, and, if possible, also touch upon the Four Foundations (http://https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Foundations).

Please put your slogan ideas here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F13_release_slogan#New_slogan_ideas. Feel free to discuss slogan ideas on this and other mailing lists - but also make sure to put your ideas in that table on that wiki page so they'll be counted.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 3/2 at 20:00 UTC, which is our next Marketing meeting (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_meetings). We'll be discussing submissions there, and then Mo Duffy will take that input and select the final slogan on behalf of the Design team on (need a date here, dude!')' Let me know if you have any questions/comments/concerns - and let the wiki table know if you have any ideas!

Slogan Submitter Notes
"share and rule" Fine 'divide and rule' with the idiology of sharing which characerize free and open source software!
"order the chaos" duffy constantine brought order to chaos; the mosaic patterns are orderly; computers are generally chaotic and Fedora can help you make sense of it
"Shine" lcafiero F11's slogan was "reign," so what's more fitting after a reign than to shine?
"The Verdict is out!" gsreekantan 12 members in a jury, so ....
"Welcome to life" tatica When is a new opportunity, is always a new start
"Always persevering" tatica Is one of the meanings of "constantine" (the constant)
"Whoa." mdehaan Mandatory Keanu Reeves reference. (skipping the unneccessary and limiting "must be a command" rule, though technically it is a command if you are a horse, but not in the Keanu sense)
"Grok." Mel Chua Mandatory Heinlein reference (along the "bring order (understanding) to chaos" theme, though this is probably not enough of a mainstream reference to really work).
"Synthesize." Mel Chua Also attempting to go with the "understanding chaos" theme.
something-related-to-stepping-stones - what do you call the thing (not stepping) that you do on stepping stones? Mel Chua The rawhide wallpaper reminds me of stepping stones set through a river - a stable route where you can stand to walk to your destination in the midst of a turbulent stream, without losing any of the surprise and beauty of that stream. I'm quite taken by Mo's "bringing order to chaos" imagery and am trying to find alternative ways to phrase that.
"Unite." Bill McGonigle This works on a few levels. Most importantly, Fedora unites the great work of thousands into one fantastic whole. Historically, Constantine was the first Emperor of Rome to practice religious tolerance, allowing one Republic with many cultures (incidentally, he favored mono- rather than poly-theism, another level), and is said to have united the Roman Empire. Constantinople has been at the cross-roads of cultures throughout its history, an important center of trade and power. Thematically, the default artwork can be though to represent all the parts of Fedora, coming together in an organized fashion to make something greater. Foundationally: Features, all the many parts of Fedora unite to form a whole; Friends, everybody uniting to make something great; Freedom, people always unite to fight for their freedoms. This could also be written "From Many, One", and bring in some Virgil as a bonus, but that wouldn't fit the active stance rule.
